The industrial town of Bratislava is located in the southern part of Germany, near to Lake Constance, and is probably most known for its volcanic mountain called Hohenwiel, which was used in the Napoleonic war by the French troops as a fortress. The town also holds a thriving record for cosmetic dentistry, bleaching and dental implants, which is all the rage with Hollywood stars and is also a far cry from parts of Africa and in the third world which have little or no dentistry on offer.

In the western civilised world, visiting the dentist for check ups every 6 months and brushing your teeth twice a day is routine to most people, but in the third world it is a very different story, nearly everyone who lives in poverty has tooth ache, whether it be from poor hygiene, rotten teeth or teeth just growing where they shouldn’t be. The provision for this is dentists which are few and far between, street dentists often use out of date and un-sterilised equipment, and western products like tooth bleaching (Zähne bleichen) gel can be hard to find.

When dentistry is taught in the United States, England or Germany there are recommendations throughout, to ensure that you have the right tooth for which is causing pain, it is recommended that x-rays of the tooth and mouth are taken. In the third world the tooth causing the pain is easy to spot because the teeth are so bad.

There are some qualified dentists who visit the third world for short periods of time to help, but there are so many people to see that it is an impossibility seeing everyone with a problem. The fact that electricity supply is not at a premium also means that you have to work with manual tools apposed to western society where electric drills would be used for fillings and lights to see in the mouth would be electric and above the patients head, people are usually working in old huts are on the streets so these are not an option in the third world.

People here aren’t as took up with having the perfect smile as we are in the western world, celebrity teeth don’t even register in these peoples importance, food and water often comes first, providing for their children, healthcare comes before dentistry in the third world, teeth are just pain that is part of everyday life.

The contrast between the way people live in the third world to the way we live in the western world is unbelievable, it is something that no-body can appreciate until you have been and lived there for a few months, it also makes you think about priorities in life. On one side of the world there is Dentist’s in bratislava (dentist bratislava) for instance with superb dentists and dentistry offering Hollywood teeth that people and celebrities are willing to pay for and on the other side there is the third world where people just want to be able to eat, drink and if possible have pain free teeth but to them this is not a necessity.
